3 Days in Chengdu: Pandas, Sichuan & Tea Houses

Day 1 explores the Three Kingdoms history at Wuhou Shrine, the lively Jinli pedestrian street with its traditional architecture, tea houses, and craft stalls, then heads north to the atmospheric Kuanzhai Alley for a Sichuan hotpot dinner.

Day 2 starts with a morning at People's Park's Heming Teahouse, then explores the Daci Temple and brand-name boutiques of Taikoo Li, shopping along Chunxi Road, and ends with a traditional Sichuan opera performance at Shufeng Yayun.

Day 3 is dedicated to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base — see pandas up close in their natural habitats, visit the nursery for cubs, and learn about conservation efforts. Afternoon returns downtown to the Chengdu Museum for exhibits on Shu civilization and then a farewell Sichuan feast.

Dedicated to Zhuge Liang, the famed Three Kingdoms strategist, Wuhou Shrine is a serene complex of red-walled halls, ancient cypress trees, and stone tablets. Wander the corridors of the memorial temple and the adjacent Han Zhao Lie Temple. Arrive early to avoid tour groups — the Hall of the Stars of Destiny is particularly quiet before 10am.

A reconstructed Song Dynasty-style pedestrian street adjacent to Wuhou Shrine. Browse silk embroidery, lacquerware, and sugar-painted figurines, or settle into a second-floor tea house overlooking the rooftops. The street is free and stays lively well into the evening.

The original branch of Chengdu's most famous mapo tofu restaurant. Their signature dish — silken tofu in a fiery chilli-and-Sichuan-pepper sauce — has been made to the same recipe since 1862. Order a side of dan dan noodles and a cold Tsingtao to cool the flames.

Three parallel alleys — Wide (Kuan), Narrow (Zhai), and Well (Jing) — lined with Qing Dynasty courtyard houses turned into boutique cafes, galleries, and craft shops. The best time to visit is late afternoon when the golden light hits the grey brick walls and the crowds thin after lunch.

Chengdu is the spiritual home of Sichuan hotpot. Choose a split pot — one half mild broth, the other blazing with dried chillies and Sichuan peppercorns — and dip sliced beef tripe, lotus root, and enoki mushrooms. Shu Daxia (蜀大侠) and Huangcheng Laoma (皇城老妈) are excellent nearby options. The numbing sensation (má) is half the fun.

Chengdu's quintessential public park and home to the century-old Heming Teahouse. Grab a bamboo chair under the camphor trees, order a cup of jasmine tea (with a thermos of hot water for refills), and watch locals play mahjong, practice calligraphy on the ground with water brushes, and get their ears cleaned by street touts. Entry to the park is free.

An ancient Buddhist temple founded in the Tang Dynasty (AD 622), tucked within the sleek modern Taikoo Li shopping complex. The contrast of Tang-era eaves and modern glass facades is striking. The temple's gardens are a peaceful refuge from the bustling retail streets outside. Free entry.

Taikoo Li is a pedestrian open-air complex blending heritage buildings with contemporary design, packed with excellent dining options. Try Ma Wang Zi (马旺子) for refined Sichuan dishes like twice-cooked pork and kung pao chicken, or one of the many international restaurants lining the courtyard lanes.

Chengdu's most famous shopping street, equivalent to Shanghai's Nanjing Road. The broad pedestrian boulevard is lined with department stores, flagship boutiques, and street food stalls. Don't miss the giant IFS rooftop panda sculpture that climbs the side of the building — the city's most Instagrammed photo spot.

An evening of traditional Sichuan opera inside the Culture Park. The highlight is face-changing (biàn liǎn) — performers change coloured masks in the blink of an eye with a flick of their fan. The show also includes shadow puppetry, fire-spitting, and comedic skits. Book VIP seats in advance for the best view of the mask-changing.

End the day with dinner in the Culture Park / People's Park area. Nuli Can (努力餐) is a historic restaurant dating to the 1930s, serving classic Sichuan dishes in a heritage building with old-school decor. Try their twice-cooked pork and fish-fragrant eggplant. The nearby street food stalls sell spicy skewers (leng chuàn) for a casual late snack.

The world's most famous giant panda facility, home to over 80 pandas. Arrive at 8am sharp — the pandas are most active during morning feeding time before the heat sets in. Visit the Moonlight and Sunshine Nurseries for cubs, the adult panda enclosures, and the red panda habitat. Book tickets online in advance as same-day tickets often sell out in peak season.

Several casual eateries line the road outside the Panda Base, serving Sichuan comfort food. Try the bamboo-themed restaurant on site for panda-shaped buns, or head to a local joint for dandan noodles and boiled dumplings. Quick and convenient before the afternoon museum visit.

A world-class museum on Tianfu Square with five floors covering Chengdu's 4,500-year history from the ancient Shu civilization through the Three Kingdoms and Tang Dynasty to modern times. The highlight is the Han Dynasty tomb relics section — jade burial suits, pottery figurines, and the stunning bronze sun chariot. Entry is free but requires an online reservation. Allow 2-3 hours.

Cap off your Chengdu adventure with a final Sichuan feast near Tianfu Square. Try Ya Lai Ya (鸭来鸭) for an accessible twist on Sichuan classics, or splurge at Songyunze (松云泽) for an exquisite tasting menu of traditional Sichuan dishes. End the meal with a bowl of sweet sticky rice balls in fermented rice wine (jiu niang xiao yuan zi) for a gentle finish.
