5 Days in London: Royals, Museums & Pub Culture

Day 1 covers the heart of royal and political London — Buckingham Palace, St James's Park, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben. End with a riverside walk along the South Bank and a pint in a historic Westminster pub.

Day 2 explores the historic City of London and the vibrant South Bank — the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Borough Market for lunch, St Paul's Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge, and the Tate Modern's contemporary collections.

Day 3 is dedicated to London's world-class museums in South Kensington — the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and V&A — followed by Hyde Park, Kensington Palace gardens, and luxury shopping at Harrods.

Day 4 takes you through London's cultural and entertainment hub — the British Museum in Bloomsbury, Covent Garden's shops and street performers, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street shopping, Soho for dinner, and a West End theatre show.

Day 5 explores maritime Greenwich — the Cutty Sark clipper ship, the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory and the Prime Meridian, Greenwich Park's hilltop views, and a Thames River boat ride back to central London for final shopping and departure.

Check into your hotel in the Victoria area, a well-connected neighbourhood steps from Buckingham Palace and Westminster. Drop your luggage and freshen up before heading out to explore royal London. The area has excellent tube and bus links.

The official London residence of the British monarch since 1837. In summer, the State Rooms are open to the public (book timed tickets online). Watch the Changing of the Guard at 11am if you arrive earlier — check the schedule online as it's not daily. The gilded gates and forecourt make for iconic photos.

London's oldest royal park, with stunning views of Buckingham Palace from the lake bridge. The pelicans have been resident since a Russian ambassador gifted them in 1664. Spot squirrels, swans, and ducks while walking the tree-lined avenues. The flower beds are beautifully maintained year-round.

The coronation church since 1066 and burial site of 30 monarchs. The Gothic architecture is breathtaking — look for Poets' Corner (Chaucer, Dickens, Austen), the coronation chair, and the Edward the Confessor shrine. Entry fee applies; audio guide included. Allow at least an hour to absorb the history.

The iconic Gothic palace housing the UK Parliament. Big Ben is actually the bell inside the Elizabeth Tower — the tower itself is the world's most photographed clock tower. UK residents can tour Parliament for free; visitors can book guided tours. The exterior is spectacular at golden hour.

Walk along the South Bank from Westminster Bridge towards the London Eye. The riverside path offers spectacular views of the illuminated Parliament at dusk. Street performers line the promenade, and the London Eye sparkles against the evening sky. A perfect transition from sightseeing to dinner.

End your first night in a traditional London pub near Parliament. Try a classic Sunday-style roast (available any evening at many pubs) or fish and chips with mushy peas. Order a pint of London Pride or a half of bitter. The Westminster Arms or The Red Lion are atmospheric choices with dark wood and brass fixtures.

A historic castle founded by William the Conqueror in 1078, serving as royal palace, prison, and treasury. See the Crown Jewels in the Jewel House (book a time slot), meet the Beefeater guards on their guided tours, and stand on Tower Green where Anne Boleyn was executed. Allow at least 2 hours.

London's most famous bridge, completed in 1894. Walk across for free, or visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition (£12) to see the Victorian engine rooms and walk the glass-floored high-level walkways 42 metres above the Thames. The bridge lifts about 800 times a year — check the schedule online.

London's most famous food market, operating for over 1,000 years on this site. Sample artisan cheeses, fresh oysters, paella from the Spanish stall, or the legendary grilled cheese sandwiches from Kappacasein. The market is busiest at lunchtime — arrive early for the best selection. Cash and card accepted at most stalls.

Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece, completed in 1710, with the second-largest cathedral dome in the world. Climb the 528 steps to the Golden Gallery for panoramic city views. The Whispering Gallery inside the dome is a unique acoustic experience. Entry fee includes audio guide. Photography not allowed inside.

Cross the sleek Millennium Bridge (the 'Wobbly Bridge') to the Tate Modern, housed in the former Bankside Power Station. The Turbine Hall's vast installations are free and spectacular. Visit the 10th-floor viewing terrace for free panoramic views of St Paul's and the City skyline. Don't miss the contemporary art in the Boiler House galleries.

Enjoy dinner with a view of the Thames at one of South Bank's riverside restaurants. Try the Oxo Tower Brasserie for modern British cuisine with panoramic views, or Skylon for seasonal sharing plates. For a more casual meal, the National Theatre's rooftop bar offers great views and affordable small plates.

Housed in a stunning Romanesque building, this museum holds over 80 million specimens. The central Hintze Hall is dominated by a 25-metre blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling. Must-sees include the dinosaur gallery with the famous T. rex cast, the earthquake simulator, the gem vault, and the stunning architecture of the building itself. Next door to the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum's interactive galleries span the Industrial Revolution to space exploration. South Kensington has excellent lunch options. Try the nostalgic diner-style Bill's for all-day breakfasts and salads, or Da Mario for classic Italian. The V&A Museum's café is one of the most beautiful in the world — the William Morris Room is a stunning Arts and Crafts interior. For a quick bite, the food court in the basement of the V&A is affordable and varied.

The world's largest museum of decorative arts and design, with 2.3 million objects spanning 5,000 years. The fashion gallery traces 400 years of clothing history. Don't miss the Cast Courts with their massive plaster reproductions of Trajan's Column and Michelangelo's David. The jewellery gallery is spectacular. Free entry; special exhibitions require tickets.

London's largest royal park (142 hectares). Walk past the Serpentine lake and Speaker's Corner to reach Kensington Palace, the birthplace of Queen Victoria. The palace's State Apartments and the Victoria Revealed exhibition tell the story of the queen's life. The Sunken Garden's flower displays are spectacular in June. Park is free; palace entry is ticketed.

The world's most famous department store, founded in 1834. Even if you're not shopping for designer goods, the ground-floor Food Halls are a visual feast — ornate Art Nouveau tiling, chandeliers, and displays of cheese, chocolate, pastries, and seafood that resemble an edible museum. The Egyptian escalator is a spectacle in itself. Open until 9pm on weekdays.

Knightsbridge offers excellent dining. Try Zuma for upscale Japanese robata grills, or the more casual Hélène Darroze at The Connaught for French-British fine dining. For a classic Italian meal, Cecconi's on Burlington Gardens has a beautiful courtyard. Book ahead for popular restaurants — Knightsbridge fills up early.

The world's first public national museum, housing 8 million works spanning two million years of human history. Must-sees: the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon Marbles (Elgin Marbles) in the Duveen Gallery, the Egyptian mummies, and the Sutton Hoo treasure. The glass-roofed Great Court is stunning. Free entry; timed tickets needed for special exhibitions. Allow at least 2 hours.

A lively piazza with street performers, boutique shops, and the Apple Market's arts and crafts stalls. The cobbled streets are lined with historic buildings including the Royal Opera House. Watch the jugglers, magicians, and musicians competing for the best pitches. The area is especially lively on weekends but always buzzing.

A wildly popular Bombay-style café serving breakfast all day, legendary bacon naan rolls, house black dal (slow-cooked for 24 hours), and great Indian street food. The Covent Garden branch is in a converted flower warehouse with stunning decor. Expect queues at peak times — join the waitlist online. The bottomless chai is a highlight.

London's entertainment epicentre. Leicester Square has major film premieres at the Odeon Luxe and the LEGO Store next door. Walk five minutes to Piccadilly Circus with its iconic neon signs, Eros statue, and the giant curved LED screen. From here, Regent Street's beautiful curved buildings lead towards Oxford Street.

Europe's busiest shopping street with over 300 shops. Flagship stores include Selfridges (the iconic department store founded in 1909 — visit the Food Hall and rooftop terrace), John Lewis, and Primark. For fashion, explore the side streets of Marylebone and Carnaby Street for independent boutiques. Oxford Street can be crowded — the best time is late afternoon on weekdays.

Soho is London's dining and entertainment heart. For a classic pre-theatre meal (2 courses for around £25 before 7pm), try Bocca di Lupo for Italian sharing plates, or the legendary Barrafina for Spanish tapas (no reservations, queue at the Adelaide Street branch). For a quick and iconic meal, Gay's The Word café serves hearty British fare. Soho's neon-lit streets buzz with energy.

No visit to London is complete without a West End show. Book tickets in advance for blockbusters like The Lion King at the Lyceum, Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre, or Wicked at the Apollo Victoria. Check out from your hotel and store luggage at the hotel or at a left-luggage facility. Victoria station has luggage storage (Luggage Point, near platforms 2-8, ~£10 per bag per day). Pack a small day bag for Greenwich. Alternatively, St Pancras or King's Cross have left luggage if you're departing from those stations later.

The world's last surviving extreme clipper, launched in 1869. This tea clipper once sailed between Britain and China in record time. Walk underneath the hull suspended 3 metres above ground, explore the captain's cabin, and see the figurehead collection. The interactive deckhouse shows what life was like for the crew. The world's largest maritime museum, telling the story of Britain's seafaring history. See Nelson's uniform from the Battle of Trafalgar (complete with bullet hole), the ornate Royal Barge, and a vast collection of ship models and navigation instruments. The museum is set in beautiful Greenwich Park grounds. Free entry, special exhibitions are ticketed.

Stand on the Prime Meridian line (0° longitude) — the line that divides the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The observatory offers one of London's best panoramic views across the Thames to Canary Wharf and the City. Visit the Flamsteed House and see the time-ball that drops daily at 1pm. The planetarium shows are excellent. Park is free; observatory entry is ticketed.

Take a Thames Clipper river bus from Greenwich Pier to central London (Westminster or Embankment piers). The 30-minute ride offers stunning views of the Thames from a unique perspective — passing under Tower Bridge, alongside the Tower of London, St Paul's, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament. Use a contactless card or Oyster for the cheapest fare (~£9 single).

Pick up last-minute souvenirs and gifts in Covent Garden's unique shops. Try the London Transport Museum shop for iconic tube-map gifts, Whittard of Chelsea for English tea and hot chocolate, and the Apple Market for handmade crafts and jewellery. Covent Garden's arcades and side streets hide wonderful boutiques. Prices are more reasonable than Oxford Street for unique items.

Head to your departure airport. London has six international airports: Heathrow (Heathrow Express from Paddington, 15 min), Gatwick (Gatwick Express from Victoria, 30 min), Stansted (Stansted Express from Liverpool Street, 45 min), Luton (Thameslink from St Pancras, 25 min), London City (DLR from Bank, 20 min), or Southend (Greater Anglia from Liverpool Street, 55 min). Allow at least 2.5 hours before your flight for check-in and security.
